Yes, it was a quarterback named Custer who led Sun Valley Village Christian to the only upset of a top-seeded team in the Southern Section-Ford football playoffs on Friday night.
Kyle Custer passed two yards to Josh Rolls in the final minute to lift Village Christian (7-4) past No. 1 Azusa, 31-24, in a Mid-Valley Division first-round game.
‘It was very exciting,’ Coach Jeff Cortez said.
Custer rallied the Crusaders from a 17-16 halftime deficit.
‘He threw the ball well and pitched the ball at the right time,’ Cortez said.
Azusa came in 10-0. Village Christian was the third-place finisher from the Olympic League.
Now Custer gets to lead the Crusaders against Rosemead on Friday at Glendale High.
‘He survived the battle,’ Cortez said.
